Want to get the most out your French experience? here's how...

Just adapt a little and remember 'Bonjour' and 'Merci'. Respect French values and you will be fine.

What is it they say? 'When in Rome...' This applies to France too! Although you can get by without speaking the French language, do try to learn at least some as most French people will be very pleased to help if you show willing.

Don't expect a display of welcome. In general, French people will be pleased to see you, they just don't often show it, but when they do, you can be sure that it is genuine.

In the main the French are very strong on family values ... remember how it used to be in the UK? Do respect your elders, neighbours, authority and your community. Be a good example to your children, buy French products and support local services and artisans. Enjoy living in france and immerse yourself in French culture, traditions and family values. .

Living in or visiting France can be good, relish in the lack of traffic on the roads, the efficient health service, first class schools and the excellent food and wines.

If you decide to live in France your life here will be what you make it, how much you want to integrate will have an affect on your lifestyle. In our region there are lots of English speaking families who have already done what you are now doing or contemplating. There is a network of English speakers who enjoy the company of each other and swap ideas and information. However, this is no consolation for integrating into French society ... Learn the language, enjoy your community and the benefits will be great. Be prepared to put in to your community at least as much as you wish to get out.

Most important though - have a great time.

Dee Cartwright
