Veteran Paratrooper receives Légion d'honneur from French President Nicolas Sarkozy at ceremony in London

Friday 18th June 2010 was a very proud day for OurFrance.net founder Alex Sutton when his father Alexander Sutton (snr) received the Légion d'honneur from French president Nicolas Sarkozy at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London during a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of General Charles de Gaulle's historic radio broadcast from the capital urging his nation to resist the Nazi occupation.

ALEXANDER SUTTON was born on November 4th, 1923, in Liverpool and went to Leamington Road School, leaving aged 14.

He has been awarded various medals including the 1939-1945 Star, North Africa Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star.

Mr Sutton joined the Air Cadet Force in 1939 and later became a member of the Home Guard.

At the age of 17, in May 1941, he enlisted with the Royal Welch Fusiliers and trained as a paratrooper the next year.

His first posting was North Africa and then Italy in September 1943.

In August 1944 he landed at Le Muy as part of "Op Dragoon" and the liberation of Southern France.

In October 1944 he landed in Greece and on went on to Athens, returning to Italy until the end of the war.

He was then posted to Palestine until December 1946 when he left the Armed Forces with the rank of Colour Sergeant.
